are you afraid of success?
One of my clients is a leader looking for a new role.
(Honestly, a lot of my clients are looking for new roles right now! Something’s in the water…)
During our first session together, she expressed frustration that she was actively avoiding and procrastinating on applying to new roles.
My client thought that fear of failure was holding her back from applying to her dream, stretch roles, but as we dug into it, something surprising came up:
Sure, she was afraid of failing in the job process, and getting rejected.
What she was MORE afraid of, however, was what would happen if she was successful.
If she got the roles she was applying for, she was worried that
❌ it’d be too much responsibility
❌ she’d have to work harder and burn out as a result
❌ she’d get the role and realize that it wasn’t what she wanted
❌ she might get this new role and fail
Once we saw it from that perspective, it made 100% sense that she wasn’t applying for the roles she wanted…
…because subconsciously, she was associating getting a new role with hard, negative things.
See, our bodies are deeply intelligent beings, and as a result, they’re programmed to avoid “bad,” “negative” things.
We typically think of this in a physical sense – once you touch a hot stove once, you’re not likely to do it again.
However, mental and emotional pain actually activate the same exact areas of your brain as physical pain.
So if you’ve decided something will be mentally or emotionally hard, difficult, or painful once you succeed…
…you’re going to avoid success, just like you avoid a hot ass stove.
, I know you are tired of fear of success getting in your way.
It’s stopped you from chasing full-force after:
✅ promotions
✅ raises
✅ new roles
✅ your great ideas
You know that if you could just get out of your own way, there’s so much more you could accomplish as a leader of color.
But honestly, if there’s one thing you’ve learned over the past few years (or maybe even decades!) getting out of your own way is really fucking tough.
You rarely have the objective perspective, tools & resources, and accountability to make the internal and external changes you’re craving to create.
Even with the best intentions and plans, you find yourself giving up or falling short.
