get the respect you deserve

Oct 3, 2024

If you’re anything like the leaders of color I work with, something you struggle with a lot is self-advocacy.

You find it difficult to:

❌ shout your wins from the rooftop

❌ set boundaries and say no

❌ ask for what you need and deserve

❌ negotiate raises, promotions, etc.

and the list goes on.

You know it’s impacting the way you’re perceived in the workplace, the roles or promotions you (don’t) receive, and the money you’re making.

That being said, you don’t know how to fix it.

Maybe it’s because you don’t want to “brag” or come off as “cocky,” “conceited” or “uppity” 😬

Honestly, it might not even be that at all – you just might struggle to even know what your wins are, what’s worth communicating to others, or just like, how or when to artfully do it.

If any of that is you, I want to talk about the first step towards advocating for yourself in the workplace:

✅ Keep A Running List of Your Wins & Update Them Daily

This may sound hokey, but this has been an absolute game changer for so many of my clients.

Just like my 1:1 clients, my guess is that you grew up in communities of color that simultaneously expected you to be excellent and successful…

….but also to be humble about said excellence and success.

You couldn’t brag too much on yourself, because you’d get accused of thinking you’re better than other folks in your community – which has led to you feeling like talking about your wins is taboo.

This feeling got compounded in predominantly white institutions where people consistently dismissed or undermined your wins, making you feel like there’s no point in speaking up, because you’ll just get shut down anyways.

Making this simple list of wins doesn’t seem like it’d have a big impact, but it’s the first step in you taking back your power and becoming your own biggest fan – which is exactly what you need to be in order to successfully advocate for yourself and get what you want and need in the workplace.

Here’s how this small trick will help:

👉🏿 It’ll help you begin to see ALL the good shit you’re doing (and trust me, you’ll realize it’s way more than you’re giving yourself credit for.)

👉🏿 It’ll force you to acknowledge even your little wins – which may feel small to you, but actually have big impacts within the organization

👉🏿 There will no longer be any chance of you forgetting your accomplishments in the workplace when it’s time for feedback conversations, performance reviews, discussions for raises and promotions, or job interviews. You have a running document for you to refer to or pull from to strengthen why you are an asset to the organization.

I promise you – if you start this today, your confidence in your skills, value, and competence in the workplace will skyrocket (even if you’re already feeling confident today.)

If even thinking of this feels tough because you know that…

…admitting your wins even to yourself feels super uncomfortable

…you genuinely can’t think of good things you do each day

…you know you won’t stay accountable without some external support

I invite you to schedule a call with me to discuss working together for 1:1 coaching.

During 1:1 coaching, we’ll get clear on your goals as a leader, what your current roadblocks are (I promise, they’re typically deeper or completely different than you currently think they are), and how I as a coach can help you feel more confident advocating for yourself in the workplace.

Are you ready to finally have:

🔥 that new role you’ve been coveting

🔥 the raise you need and that’s WAY overdue

🔥 the promotion you’ve been working hard for

🔥 the respect your work deserves

and to have it all with ease?

If so, run, don’t walk to schedule a call with me for 1:1 coaching.

It’s time for you to get the money, recognition, and celebration that you deserve.

xx,

Gieselle
