Me and my client were going through their original coaching goals from when they became a 1:1 client of mine…

…and after 3 months of working together, those goals just weren’t relevant anymore.

Why?

My client said it best:

“I just feel like an entirely different person.”

In three months of 1:1 coaching, they were feeling so much more confident as an entrepreneur and leader.

They had gotten rid of decades of money scarcity issues.

I recently went to a doctor and instead of getting the support that I need, I left:

😡gaslit

😡spoken down to

😡deeply upset

Why?

He didn’t view us as collaborators in my health.

He viewed himself as the “expert” and me as the student.

Which is ridiculous and steeped in white-supremacy culture…because sure, you’ve gone to medical school…

…but how could anyone be more of an expert on my body than me?

This doesn’t just happen in the medical field, though.

This can happen when you’re searching for a business or leadership coach, too.

Most coaches tell you: do exactly what I do, and that’s your path to success.

Here’s the problem with that:

That way of “coaching” insinuates that they know what’s best for you…

…when the truth is, a real coach (like me!) knows that the only person who knows what’s best for you, is well, you.

That’s why, in my 1:1 coaching practice, I never claim to be an expert, or tell you what to do.

What I do is collaborate with:

✨your intuition (feel disconnected from it? We’ll find it!)

✨your body

✨your lived experience

✨your answers

to find the right answers and next steps for YOU.

(Because what’s right for me, or any of my other clients may not be right for you.)

Once we do that work over and over again, you’ll stop seeking out experts with “the right answers” for how you can expand in your leadership.

Instead, you’ll know the truth:

There’s no point in seeking out answers from elsewhere – because the “right” answers you’ve been looking for have been with you all along.

We live in a capitalistic society that creates impossible standards for us in our personal and professional lives.

If you do all of the things you’re supposed to do, you're a “good,” “respectable,” “worthy” member of society.

And if you don’t?

You’re lazy, worthless, and embarrassing.

That’s why you feel like you’re failing as an adult, sometimes.

It’s not because you actually care about most of these things that you have to do – it’s because it feels fundamentally unsafe socially and emotionally to not get shit done.

So, how do you overcome it?

You’ve gotta dive deep on a body level to:

👉🏿understand what your body is really afraid of

👉🏿learn what your body really needs to feel safe

👉🏿help you feel, on a deep, body level that it’s okay to not have everything done

If there’s one thing we’ve all learned as folk

If there’s one thing we’ve all learned as folks of color in white dominated societies, it’s this:

We are only worthy of being respected and lauded if we’re exceptional.

We learn this by seeing:

😪which folks of color are celebrated in media every day
😪which folks of color are rewarded visas and which aren’t
😪how much folks of color have to achieve in order to rise to the same places as mediocre white men

In addition to learning this from a white-dominant society, we learn this message at home as well from parents who are well-meaning…

…but whose desire to keep us safe leads them to beat into us (sometimes literally) that being exceptional is the only way for us to maintain love and security.

That’s how you’ve gotten to this place where you care so much about being exceptional or competent…

…but also know on the flip side that all the effort you put in to maintain the high quality of your work makes you exhausted and miserable.

Sometimes, when the exhaustion really hits, you probably think:

“I wish I could do the least and ‘fail up’ like white folks.”

Here’s something we don’t talk about enough in

Here’s something we don’t talk about enough in regards to rest:

Sometimes, you’re not exhausted because you’re working long hours, or spending a ton of time on something.

You’re exhausted because the thing that you’re doing, while short-lived, is emotionally draining.

That was the case for today’s guest on the podcast.

This client of mine was the Executive Director of a non-profit, and despite her hours being totally reasonable, she was wildly and completely burnt out when we started working together.

To the average person, this made no sense.

I mean, if you’re not being worked to the bone, you should be able to handle it, right?

That’s how my client felt.

She wasn’t just navigating burn out…

…she was navigating the crushing guilt and shame of being burnt out when she had so much privilege.

This feeling was also amplified because my client’s community was in the midst of a major crisis, and as the child of Immigrants, she not only felt like she should be holding more space for folks on the front lines – she wanted to.

But after spending her days in a role where she was:

❌constantly holding emotional space for folks in her organization
❌navigating the harm she experienced as a BIPOC leader
❌trying to protect the BIPOC folks beneath her
❌striving to honor her values of being a humane, caring leader

….she had no energy left for anyone, including herself.

I’m so glad to say that during the time that we’ve worked together, my client has 100% healed from the deep burnout she was experiencing.
